AFTRA re-elects Morgan president Johnson, Jolliffe, Ruck win seats Actor Ron Morgan was re-elected prez of the Los Angeles Local of the American Federation of Television & Radio Artists in a vote that also saw Membership First candidates Anne-Marie Johnson, David Jolliffe and Alan Ruck winning seats after campaigning on a platform opposing merger with SAG. Morgan will begin his new two-year term July 1; he ran unopposed. Also uncontested in their reelection for two-year terms were first VP Susan Boyd Joyce, a singer; actor Gabrielle Carteris, second veep; third veepee Bobbie Bates, a dancer; fourth VP Jason George, an actor; recording secretary Patrika Darbo, an actor; and thesp Jay Gerber continues as treasurer. Reelected to three-year terms on the Local board of directors were actors David Bowe, Raza Burgee, Andrew Caple-Shaw, Carteris, Bob Joles, Kate Linder and Paul Napier; announcer Mike Sakellarides; dancer Galen Hooks; broadcaster Pepe Barreto; and singers Joyce and Dick Wells. Incoming Los Angeles Local board members include actors David Andriole, Mimi Cozzens, Jolliffe, Marcia Strassman; and announcer Chuck Southcott. Morgan was also elected to the AFTRA national board of directors for a four-year term; he also serves as a national VP of the union. In addition to him, national board members from the Los Angeles Local reelected to four-year terms include actors Carteris, Jay Gerber and Paul Petersen; Bates; and singers Joyce and Sally Stevens. Newly-elected to the AFTRA national board are actors D. W. Moffett, Jason Priestley, Johnson and Ruck. AFTRA's 62nd National Convention will be held Aug. 6-8 in Chicago, and 198 Los Angeles delegates were elected. There are 73 seats total on the new AFTRA national board, which will be officially seated Aug. 9, following the convention. The AFTRA Los Angeles Local will be assigned 26 seats on the new national board; 13 were up for election, 11 were open seats and two seats were assigned to the announcer category and the newsperson category, respectively. All AFTRA Los Angeles Local officer and board terms begin July 1. The AFTRA National Board terms begin at the conclusion of this summer's National Convention. A total of 3,262 valid ballots were received in the AFTRA Los Angeles election. Membership First advocates a more aggressive negotiating posture than the moderates who dominate AFTRA's elected leadership. Johnson serves as SAG's First VP; Jolliffe headed the feature-primetime negotiating committee before it was abolished earlier this year; and Ruck is a SAG national board member. Several other Membership First candidates did not win seats in the AFTRA election. Sources indicate the Patrick Swayze starrer about a rogue FBI cop in Chicago has been canceled after 13 episodes, with the final installment having aired on April 23. A&E told Daily Variety that no decision has been made. Ratings were soft for the Sony-produced series that got off to a rough start when Swayze was diagnosed with cancer. At the Television Critics Assn. panel for the series in January in which he was supposed to appear and promote the show, he was hospitalized with pneumonia. "The Beast" also starred Travis Fimmel, Kevin J. O'Connor, Larry Gilliard Jr. and Lindsay Pulsipher. There was speculation at the end of the season that because of Swayze's illness, a new lead would have to take over if the show was renewed. Lou Diamond Phillips came aboard for a guest role for episode No. 7, but sources say he wasn't considered as a headliner. One of the actors on the show was put on a contract hold through August in case of a renewal. Reps of several thesps still have not heard whether the series was being picked up or canceled and were trying to juggle their schedules as job offers were coming in. While A&E offers a handful of offnet dramas, the cabler got into the original scripted business last summer with CBS Paramount's "The Cleaner."
